WAMARINO SHEARS
TE REO MĀORI STRATEGY
THE WHY
The Waimarino Shears is heading into a new direction in its delivery of a quality shearing show. With the unforeseen cancellation of the shearing show in 2020 due to covid 19, this told us to re-assess and look on how we can survive in a new environment and identifying three key drivers:
-
Sustainability
-
Relevance
-
Our point of difference
In order to achieve these key drivers, thinking, reflective practice and creativity is required to inform a new normality of the show.
It was important to find a mechanism where we could address these three key drivers in a new way of being, doing and knowing.
The birth of a Te Reo Māori strategy occurred.
The strategy provides a direct focus of these key drivers to include but not limited to:
-
Sustaining a common purpose that lifts the profile of the show and its deliverables
-
By bringing an awareness of Te Reo Māori within the entire shearing sector enhances the shows relevance
-
Embedding the use of Te Reo Māori to inform an inclusive point of difference
THE WHAT:
To embed a Te Reo Māori strategy in the Waimarino Shears that provides a sustainable direction with relevance as our point of difference.
THE HOW:
Whilst in its infancy, the strategy has the potential to grow, develop and evolve.
STAGE 1 WILL BE:
Identify relevant kupu Māori within the shearing sector to include:
-
The shearing show e.g. competitor
-
The shearing industry e.g. shearing plant
-
The farm e.g. paddock
Through the identification of ngā kupu Māori, The Waimarino Shears will promote their use through:
-
Provide a Tuakana Teina approach executing correct pronunciation of ngā kupu Māori for the entire commentary team
-
Continued use of ngā kupu Māori through all show commentary
-
Encourage crowd participation in identifying and pronouncing of ngā kupu Māori
-
Display signage within the grandstand, shearing stand and other areas of importance
-
Provide print sized booklet of ngā kupu Māori for all competitors, kaimahi and spectators to take with them as a personal resource
-
Promote the on-going learning of ngā kupu Māori via our newly developed website
STAGE 2 IN 2022 WILL BE:
Enhancing the learning of ngā kupu Māori by embedding these into simple sentence structures and phrases. This will affirm the development of the use of Te Reo Māori and captures the key drivers of:
Sustainability, relevance and a point of difference.
VALUES OF THE STRATEGY
Raising the awareness of Te Reo Māori is ground breaking for the shearing industry and the Waimarino Shears is excited to lead and make this courageous move and commitment. We encourage other shows within Aotearoa to consider the normalizing of Te Reo Māori and the value and credibility it will bring to the profile of the entire shearing industry.
The Waimarino Shears would like to thank our very own Che Wilson from Che’s channel Te Paepae Waho who informed ngā kupu Māori and the funding support from Te Puni Kokiri.
